AMUSEMENT BUILDINGS AND
TEMPORARY HAUNTED HOUSE PERMITS
A building permit is required to create a temporary or permanent "haunted house". The haunted house shall not be occupied, operated or opened for use until it has been inspected and given an occupancy certificate.
A temporary use permit may be required.
UBC Sec. 408.2. An Amusement Building (including "haunted houses") ... is a building or portion thereof, temporary or permanent, used for entertainment... and which...provides a walkway through a course so arranged that the required exits are not apparent due to theatrical distractions....
UBC Sec. 303.1.3. A temporary Group A, Division 4 Occupancy (a haunted house with over 750 square feet of area or occupant load over 50) matching the above desciption and having either walls or roof is required to comply with the following UBC requirements for amusement buildings. In addition, all combustible decorative materials shall be flame resistant per Uniform Fire Code Sec. 1103.3.3.
UBC Section 304.2.2.2. When the amusement course is temporarily set up in a building classified as a Group B Occupancy having walls or roof, and does not exceed an occupant load of 50 persons, it should still comply with the following UBC Sections 408, 904.2.3.6 and 1013.6:
An approved smoke-detection system installed in accordance with the Fire Code shall be provided in amusement buildings, UBC Sec. 408.5.2. The activation of any single detector is to sound an alarm at a constantly supervised location where a SYSTEM RESPONSE can be manually initiated. The SYSTEM RESPONSE shall also automatically:
1. Stop confusing sounds and visual effects.
2. Activate an approved directional exit path.
3. Cause illumination of the exit path.
A public address system which is audible throughout the amusement building shall be provided.
UBC Sec. 1013.6. Approved directional exit marking and exit signs shall be provided in the amusement building.
UBC Sec. 904.2.3.6. Temporary amusement buildings over 1000 square feet in area shall have installed a "temporary" or permanent automatic sprinkler system.
