One of the hallmarks of the craftsman house is the abundance of built-in furniture. It is remarkable that although Stickley's chief occupation was furniture manufacturer, he would design houses which cut out all but the essential items of movable furniture and built in everything else so that it would combine with the interior detailing to form a harmonious whole. Stickley wrote: " I plan the woodwork so that it embraces the built-in fittings, so that every bookcase or corner seat is a part of the development of the woodwork".

I'm nuts about the arts and crafts movement, and am a mad collector of stickely, copper lamps and mica products. I am a newbee to the internet and am THRILLED to find a place where I can find dealers, info etc. Living in Cincinnati, I've frequently felt that NOBODY HERE KNOWS ANYTHING about Arts and Crafts style. I've trotted into the self proclaimed "best" furniture dealer here and had them look at me like I was nuts when I asked if they carried any mission/arts crafts or other similar products. I was beginning to think this stuff was only available in California, or from the revered stickley folks up east.

Great site, but I'm an interior designer and looking for more information on window treatments. I'm refurbushing an old hotel done in arts and crafts period. I want to keep the period true but I have to treat large windows in a ballroom.

Response to Comments: This is in response to the interior designer who posted on Feb. 23, I've searched through all of my listings and the closest information on Arts & Crafts windows is: http://www.ragtime.org/ragtime/M/MS.html Ragtime has listed some architects who may be happy to steer you in the right direction!

We are building a home with many elements of the Arts & Crafts style and are trying to fing samples of unique balusters and newell posts.

Specifically, we are fond of the "cut out" style of baluster versus the more common spindel.

If anyone could offer guidance it would be most appreciated.

I love this site. May be you can help me to locate some designs in art glass for the mission/praire styles. I am in the process of doing some lamps in stain glass and need some patterns. Anything would be appreciated.

I suggest calling Delphi Stained Glass at 1-800-248-2048 for patterns. They have a good catalog of stained glass supplies and might know how to get mission style and prairie school patterns. The folks at www.roycrofter.com may have suggestions too, you can reach them by email at jfpetty@mindspring.com

Yummy! - however, dark background is troublesome on these old eyes. Wish you had more pictures. My favorite period.

GUEST,

Yes I do wish I had more pictures, but they take up so much room on my ISP's server I know they would start charging more! As for the background, which I agree did feel like being in a dark forest, has been dropped to neutral black to give more contrast to the rich arts and crafts colors (which look different on every computer monitor, sigh...).

Greetings! I'm a full-time student studying for my degree in B.A. (Bachelor of Arts!) Honours for Visual Arts. At present I'm researching the role of Art and Design in today's society. Should Art and Design have a social responsibility? I have searched through many webpages, for suitable information, but to no avail! I feel it would be both constructive and informative, if such information was made avbailable for us students to delve into, and help us up the ladder of success! So how about it Artists and Designers - will you part with invaluable informations and personal views/opinions? It will surely be most appreciated! Tahnk you!

Hello

I need to obtain the building codes state of New York Ulster County for residential permit for decks and changes in the law since 1985. I want to find out about preexisting structures before the codes were adapted. I need to find out when they were adapted and about grandfathering. Local town clerk said book doesn't exist in the offices but try the library. What do contractors do if uncertain about every law.It is a very rural town that years ago didn't have permits. Now you must file. Will the UFB book tell all and how do I get it. Thanks smcg@ulster.net I believe the town adapted the state laws in 1988.

Susanne,

I'd just like to say that here in California we never have those sorts of
problems, I'd like to say it, but it wouldn't be true! Like everywhere,
building codes are dynamic, always changing to meet new practices and
materials. Most structures are considered to be in compliance with codes if
they met the codes which were in effect at the  time of construction
(grandfathering). As long as structures are not so bad they must be
condemned, it is usually ok to just let them be. For example; if George
Washington slept in a house and today it remained without bathrooms and the
front porch steps (still sound as a dollar) had substandard treads, I would
anticipate that the local authorities would allow the historic stair treads
to remain, but require that restroom facilities be added for sanitation.

If I understand your situation correctly, the city did not require building
permits for decks until recently (adopted New York State building codes in
1988 ?) and you are concerned that your deck is substandard or may cause
problems upon sale of the property. Try asking the local building official
to inspect the deck and give you a correction list, that way you can be
assured there is a record of complete approved inspections (if you get your
final inspection). The building department may ask you to draw up some sort
of plans to go with this record showing where the deck is located on the
property, it's dimensions and construction details. They may also ask you to
pay a fee for this inspection. If your local jurisdiction is unwilling to
perform such an inspection because the project has already been built,
perhaps a private-sector home inspector (say that fast three times) could be
found to perform an inspection, make recommendations and give you a document
showing that you have made reasonable effort to demonstrate your deck is
safe (you don't want visiting babies crawling through the guardrail and
taking a spill or the postman asking for compensation because he broke his
leg on your crooked steps!).

As for code books, they are expensive. Get them from a library, order them
through a bookstore or just find a licensed bonded contractor who is a
professional and knows the codes in force in your township, city or county.

Bob

Thank you for a great place from which to base my search for information! I was becoming frusrated trying to find information, & especially pictures, to help us plan details for the house we are building, but it appears I have struck the Mother Lode here. No longer will I have to try to explain the beauty (isn't that an oxymoron?) of a Mission window detail or a perfect, tight mortise & tenon joint to my dear wife, who was becoming even more frustrated than I. Thanx for saving our house (soon to be a home), & quite possibly our marriage. Thanx again, Randy Nelson North East, PA nelsclan@velocity.net
